About the University

Samara University (named after Korolev) is a multidisciplinary research and education centre and a flagship university of Russian cosmonautics, ranking among the leading universities of Russia and the world. It holds 44th place in the TOP-100 best universities of the country and the 1201–1400 band of the QS World University Rankings.

Samara University trains specialists for the rocket-and-space, aviation, radio-electronics, metallurgical, automotive, infocommunication and other industries through full-time, part-time (evening) and extramural study across 202 degree programmes. On graduation, a state diploma is issued conferring the qualification of specialist, bachelor or master.

Academic Module

The Winter University consists of 2 programmes, each comprising an educational, a project and a cultural-excursion part. The programmes are aimed at reinforcing the professional and transversal skills of engineering specialists through project activities and engagement with the achievements of contemporary scientists.

The Winter University in engineering sciences at Samara University includes sessions common to all participants and specialised sessions depending on the chosen programme. The specialised part is interconnected with the project activities.

Each programme includes project work. The assignments are aimed at developing the skills involved in solving the technical problems required in real-world production. The project part flows from the educational one, since the competencies gained in class are needed for team work on cases.

In this way, participants develop creative thinking and the skills of generating ideas, finding non-standard solutions and applying a creative approach in various fields of activity, in particular in engineering. One of the disciplines studied is aimed at building a general understanding of modern Russian technological achievements, their role in world industry and the country's strategic development.

The Winter University in engineering sciences at Samara University includes sessions common to all participants and specialised sessions depending on the chosen track. The specialised part is interconnected with the project activities.

The «Aerospace Systems Engineering» programme is aimed at giving participants a comprehensive understanding of the spacecraft development process, as well as the effective organisation of work and management of projects in the space field, which is essential for the successful accomplishment of complex engineering tasks and for meeting the high standards of the space industry. Additive technologies, needed for designing multifunctional parts, are covered as a separate block.

The «Design and Construction of Modern Unmanned Aircraft Systems» programme is aimed at giving participants the skills of conceptual design of unmanned systems: setting objectives, gathering initial data, and selecting the platform and architecture.

Visiting the university's laboratories is also an integral part of the project activities — as a way to immerse oneself in the process and to receive advice on the developed idea directly from a practising specialist.

Cultural and Leisure Module

The cultural and excursion programme includes:

  • a guided city tour in Russian and English accompanied by guides;
  • a trip to the Samara University training airfield;
  • a visit to the university's Museum of Aviation and Cosmonautics;
  • a visit to the university's Aircraft Engine History Centre;
  • a visit to the «Living Memory» school local-history museum;
  • a visit to Samara University laboratories (the Research Laboratory of Advanced Technological Processes of Plastic Deformation, the Research Laboratory of Plastic Deformation of Special Materials, the Research and Education Centre for Gas-Dynamics Studies, the Laboratory of Intelligent Enterprise Management Systems, the CAM Centre);
  • team-building (getting acquainted and forming teams);
  • a guided tour of the university campus;
  • painting matryoshka dolls;
  • a creative concert by the project participants.
